Insurer Pays For Ecological Worsening

A British insurance company was ordered to pay $10mln in damages for an oil spill that has harmed the unique ecosystem of the pristine Galapagos Islands. Scientists say more than 60 per cent of one island's unique species were wiped out by the spill.

This ecological disaster happened in 2001. The Ecuadorian tanker Jessica spilled more than 650,000 liters of crude oil near the Pacific archipelago.

Terra Nova, London based insurer was ordered to pay the park $10mln. Another catastrophe must be prevented in Java Sea. A 500-square-kilometer area of the Java Sea has been declared a danger zone following trouble with a subsea pipeline that transports natural gas. Strong currents recently ripped a section of pipeline loose from the seabed. The pipeline transports gas from fields owned by major oil company BP PLC to East Java.
