Bosnia: Multi-Ethnic Political Party Disappointed

The elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina were disappointing for the multi-ethnic formation SDP (Social Democrats), whose leader Zlatko Lagurndzija said that the presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday penalised his party more than any other.

The 2.34 million Bosnians in fact voted in three elections. First, they elected the three co-presidents (one Moslem, one Croat and one Serb). For the central Parliament, the Croat-Moslem Federation elected 28 Members, the Serb Republic 14. Finally, for the regional parliaments, the Croat-Moslem Federation voted for 98 members, while the Serb Republic chose its 83 members of the autonomous parliament.

The Moslem formation DAS (Democratic Action Party, nationalist, of ex-president Alija Izetbegovic, declared that it had gained 36.94% of the vote in the Croat-Moslem area, while the Serb Democratic Party (SDS, nationalists) claimed victory in the eastern part of the Serb Republic (Republika Srpska), while the independent Social Democratic Party, SNDS, won in the cities of Banja Luka and Prijedor.
