Indonesian restaurant bomber tried to kill himself in 'cool' way: police

A man suspected of bombing an American fast food restaurant in Indonesia over the weekend was trying to kill himself in a sensational way and will undergo psychiatric tests, police said Monday.

The man was seriously injured when he detonated a small bomb in an A&W restaurant in a mall in an eastern suburb of the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Saturday. He was the only person injured in the attack.

The 36-year-old electrical repairman told investigators Monday from his hospital bed that he was trying to commit suicide, said Jakarta police chief Maj. Gen. Adang Firman, without saying whether he also intended to kill others too.

"He was trying to cause a sensation," Firman said. "He said if he killed himself in a normal way it would not be cool."

Restaurant employees have said the man looked nervous or ill and requested medical help before detonating the device, reports AP.

A police spokesman said the man would undergo psychiatric tests.

The blast caused security jitters in the world's most populous Muslim nation.

The militant group Jemaah Islamiyah has been blamed for four attacks targeting Western interests in Indonesia since 2002, including two in the capital and two on the resort island of Bali that together killed more than 240 people.

Separatists and criminals have also been implicated in several other smaller blasts.

The blast came just over a week before U.S. President George W. Bush was due to visit Indonesia.
