Another in a series of recent terrorist acts was reported Thursday in the Uzbek city of Bukhara. As reported by the Associated Press, a woman with an explosive device strapped to her body detonated the bomb, killing one person and critically injuring herself. She was reported hospitalized in critical condition. The explosion occurred at approximately 4 p.m. local time. It was said to have taken place in a two-story residential building.
A police spokesman said authorities were investigating possible links between the latest bombing to the other terrorist acts that have occurred in Tashkent and Bukhara over the last week. The latest incident occurred in the same area of the city in which a bomb-making workshop exploded last Sunday night, killing 10. On Thursday, an Uzbek police spokesman said the spate of terrorism might be the work of Al Qaeda.
Forty-four deaths have been reported in the week of bombings and clashes between police and fighters. Most of the victims have been presumed terrorists.
