Newly surfaced footage shows the aftermath of the crash of Russia's last operational An-22 Antey, which broke apart mid-air and plunged into a reservoir in the Ivanovo region, killing all seven crew members.
The video, published by the local outlet IvanovoNews, was filmed in the early hours following the catastrophe near the Uvod Reservoir. The footage shows rescue teams in boats approaching a large object protruding from the water, believed to be part of the aircraft's wreckage. Emergency and operational vehicles are also visible on the shoreline.
Authorities reported that the An-22 came to rest approximately 150 meters from the reservoir's bank at a depth of five meters. The aircraft fell in an uninhabited area near the village of Ivankovo.
According to sources cited by Kommersant, the aircraft was the final An-22 still in service in Russia. Witnesses said the plane began to fall apart in the air before its fragments plunged into the reservoir. All seven people on board died, and divers will conduct recovery operations to retrieve the bodies.
The aircraft, operated for more than 50 years, had been officially withdrawn from active service in 2024. Preliminary assessments point to a likely technical failure as the cause of the crash.
The crash occurred on December 9, when the An-22 was performing a test flight following maintenance. Built in 1975, the aircraft had accumulated nearly 6,500 hours of total flight time and completed 3,290 landings over its long operational history.
