Palm Oil and Health: Russian Specialist Reveals Who Should Avoid It

Endocrinologist Explains When Palm Oil Can Become Dangerous

A leading Russian endocrinologist says palm oil is harmless for healthy individuals but may provoke dangerous reactions in people with hidden metabolic or gastrointestinal disorders.

Palm Oil Safe for Healthy People, Expert Says

In a conversation with Pravda.Ru, dietitian, endocrinologist and medical sciences candidate Elena Syurakshina explained that the body's reaction to palm oil depends directly on a person's overall health. According to her, the product does not pose risks for healthy individuals, but it can be problematic for those with chronic gastrointestinal or endocrine conditions.

"People can be conditionally divided into two categories — healthy individuals and those with hidden autoimmune or metabolic disorders. Palm oil will not harm a healthy person. But for those who already have issues with the gastrointestinal tract or the immune system, such a product may provoke unwanted reactions," she said.

Government Confirms Safety Standards, but Moderation Still Needed

Earlier, Vedomosti reported, citing a response from the Russian Government to the State Duma, that existing regulations governing the production and use of palm oil ensure product safety for both adults and children. Syurakshina, however, emphasized that even when the product is considered safe, individual health factors can change the picture.

She noted that palm oil most often appears in sweet baked goods and confectionery products. While occasional consumption is acceptable for healthy people, individuals with metabolic issues should limit such products.

"The main sources of palm oil are sweet bakery items — cookies, buns, pastries. Harm becomes likely when these products are consumed excessively, especially by people with existing metabolic disorders. They may face the development of insulin resistance, weight gain and type 2 diabetes," Syurakshina added.

Prevention and Early Detection Remain Crucial

The specialist stressed the importance of regular preventive care. Routine check-ups, blood sugar monitoring and cholesterol control help identify risks early and prevent complications in those who may be sensitive to certain food components, including palm oil.
