Two Honduran soldiers shot dead six of their colleagues and injured another two because of an argument over a card game during a village festival, police said.
The brothers Luis and Marvin Flores carried out the killings with army-issue rifles on Monday in the village of El Magueral, 150 km (90 miles) east of Tegucigalpa, said Miguel Martinez, spokesman for the Honduran national police.
The soldiers then fled to nearby mountains to escape arrest, Martinez said. Police have launched a manhunt for the brothers.
Among the victims were an army lieutenant and a sergeant.
The two soldiers who were injured were taken to hospital in a helicopter and are in serious condition, reports the AP.
