It has been reported that the Russian administration has agreed to guarantee personal security to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

The former Ukrainian leader had released statement saying that he and his relatives receive death threats from extremists. Yanukovych asked for political asylum in Russia. The statement was made against the background of aggravation of Ukrainian-Russian relations in the Crimea.

The President of Ukraine disappeared on February 25th, after the Verkhovna Rada dismissed his from the position. His whereabouts remain a mystery to all. Early this week, it was reported that Yanukovych was staying on a Russian naval base in the Crimea. Afterwards, it was said that the former president of the troubled nation was hiding at a holiday home in the Moscow region.

Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov could neither deny nor confirm the information.

After Yanukovych was dismissed from his position, the Verkhovna Rada set the date of early presidential vote on May 25th and put the fugitive president on international wanted list. Later, the parliament asked The Hague Tribunal to try Yanukovych for crimes against humanity.
