Thirty people involved in drug smuggling in Vietnam were sentenced to death. A court in Vietnam found that 21 men and 9 women participated in the transport of two tons of drugs from Laos, world's second largest opium poppy cultivation region after Afghanistan. The convicts were supposedly transporting the drugs to Vietnam to subsequently deliver them to China.

The trial on the case lasted for 20 days and was a record on the number of death sentences.

According to the laws of Vietnam, storing 600 grams of heroin is punishable by death. Presently, as many as 700 people await their execution in the country.
