Moscow mourns legendary Spartak footballer

 

The funeral service for Russian legendary player of FC Spartak, Fyodor Cherenkov, was held in Moscow today, October 7. Players of the Russian football team, President of the Russian Football Association Nikolai Tolstoy, former Spartak captain Yegor Titov and incumbent head coach of the team Murat Yakin came to bid farewell to the player.

The funeral ceremony was planned to last from 10 to 12  a.m. on October 7 at Sokolniki Park. However, the service had to be held for nearly three hours due to the number of those, who came for the ceremony - as many as 13,500 people.

The player will be buried on Moscow's Troekurovskoye Cemetery.

Former FC Spartak footballer Fyodor Cherenkov died at age 56 on the night of October 4. The player died had a brain tumor.

Cherenkov made 34 appearances for USSR national football team, scoring 12 goals. Although widely regarded by Spartak's fans as team's best player ever, he was always dropped by the national team on the eve of several major tournaments including 2 World Cups and a European Championship.
