According to a new American study, 18% of men and 11% of women in the United States drink more than recommended. As many as 8% of men and 3% of women are alcoholics, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The study was published by experts of the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. "In general, most adults do not drink at all, but the problem has been getting more serious among drinking people," Patricia Guenther, who led the study.

Guenther and her colleagues collected the information based on the data of federal research on nutrition and health, which included 5,400 men and women over 21 years of age. Each of them was asked a series of questions, including: "How much did you drink yesterday?"

As many as 64 percent of men and 79 percent of women assured the researchers that they had not drunk alcohol at all. Eighteen percent of men and ten percent of women said that they were drinking, but not more than was generally recommended.

Nine percent of men and eight percent of women slightly exceeded the dose the previous day, whereas eight percent of men and three percent of women said they had drunk a lot.

Noteworthy, the research was based exclusively on opinion polls.
