Another Chernobyl Tragedy?

Ukrainian Ministry for Emergency Situation refutes rumors about another accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant
Rumors about a radiation incident that allegedly occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant during the May vacations spread all over Ukraine. In order to avert panic, the Ukrainian Ministry for Emergency Situation made an official refutation. According to information obtained by the ministry, no incidents or emergency situation has been registered at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and at the object Ukrytie (shelter) within the several past days. It is also reported that the radiation control automated system fixed no radiation increase on the whole territory of the Chernobyl isolation zone and on the industrial area of the nuclear power plant. The Ministry reports that the radiation situation is stable in the region, "the strength of exposure dose on the ground and radionuclid contents in water don't exceed the pre-accident showing."

The Ukrainian news agency Observer reports with reference to information obtained from "a worker of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant" that the background radiation near the object Ukrytie makes up 25 microroentgen per hour. The average background radiation in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev (as the official sources report) makes up 0.013 microroentgen per hour, 0.009 – 0.017 microroentgen per hour in the Kiev region (the norm showing is 0.05 microroentgen per hour), in the city of Chernobyl  the showing made up 0.038 microroentgen per hour (the testing level is 0.085). In other words, the situation is quite stable. However, the refutation of the rumors about an alleged incident sounds rather sinister for those people who are perfectly unaware of the rumors themselves. People still remember what was the official information about the 1986 tragedy in Chernobyl as reported by official authorities.
