Russia beats Swiss 6-3 to stay undefeated at the World Championship

With the Swiss back on the ice less than 24 hours after their 4-1 win over Denmark and Russia well rested, the hosts, chasing their first world title since 1993, took charge of the game from the start.

Russia's Sergei Zinoviev opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the contest after a perfect feed from Danis Zaripov from behind the goal.

The Russians, however, soon lost their top player, Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Ovechkin, for the rest of the game.

Last year's NHL rookie of the year received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for a hit to the head of Valentin Wirz, who had to be helped to get back to the Swiss bench and was later diagnosed with a light concussion, Reuters reports.

Ovechkin was ejected from Russia's 6-3 win over Switzerland at 8:42 of the first period for a check to the head of Wirz, who needed to be helped off the ice.

After serving a too-many-men-on-the-ice minor for Russia in the first period, Ovechkin stepped out of the penalty box and laid a high hit on Wirz.

Ovechkin will miss Monday's game against Sweden. Russia has already qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament with a 5-0 record.

Monday's game against Sweden has little meaning other than to determine pairings for the quarterfinals, the AP reports.
