Nicolas de Stael Exhibition Opens At The Hermitage

Monday saw the opening of an exhibition in the State Hermitage with the title "Nicolas de Stael. Paintings. From museums and private collections of Western Europe, the United States and Russia."
RIA Novosti learned from the Hermitage press service that the exhibition was being held as part of France's official program to celebrate St. Petersburg's tercentenary. The French Embassy in Russia and Consulate General in St. Petersburg helped to organize the exposition after de Stael's son Gustav suggested it be held.

The display features 52 works from various periods of Nicolas de Stael's creative life. St. Petersburg residents will see many of these for the first time.

Nicolas de Stael was born on January 5th, 1914, in St. Petersburg, but his family left Russia in January 1920. The artist spent the postwar years in Paris. The master painter died on March 16th, 1955, without finishing his biggest canvas, "The Concert." The current exhibition at the Hermitage, which is one of the world's largest artistic and cultural-historical museums, will be open until August 17th.
