American tourist dies in fall from Table Mountain

An American tourist was killed when he apparently slipped and fell while climbing Cape Town's landmark Table Mountain.

The U.S. consulate identified him Tuesday as David Andretta. He was a 31-year-old doctor from Washington D.C., the Cape Times reported.

Andretta and his wife Melissa had planned to visit the winelands around Cape Town on Sunday but instead made a last minute decision to take advantage of the fine weather and hike up the mountain - a popular tourist attraction, the Cape Times reported.

They went up separate routes and Melissa Andretta became alarmed when her husband, an experienced climber, did not return, the newspaper said.

Rescue teams looked for him Sunday night and resumed the search Monday, when the weather had turned, with torrential rains and winds. The body was recovered Monday.
