A year after Hurricane Jeanne hit South Florida, many residents continue to struggle to rebuild their homes and lives.
According to Federal statistics, more than 1,100 people are still living in Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers in Martin and Saint Lucie counties where Category 3 Hurricane Jeanne hit the hardest.
County officials say they still haven't received millions of dollars in reimbursements from FEMA for hurricane costs. Local lawmakers wrote acting FEMA director R. David Paulison last week expressing their frustrations over the issue.
A FEMA official says he understands the concerns and the agency is now moving forward at a good pace.
Hurricane Jeanne made landfall Sept. 25, 2004, with sustained winds of 120 mph. The same area in Martin County was hit three weeks earlier by Hurricane Frances, the AHN reports.
