Mother drowns infant in India fearing AIDS infection

Woman drowned her 10-month-old adopted son because she feared he had the AIDS virus in southern India, an official said Wednesday.

Chintaluri Kumari tied a stone to the baby and threw him into a well Sunday in the village of Guripudi in Andhra Pradesh state's East Godavari district, Navin Chand, a district police official, said.

The infant's body has been recovered and officials were awaiting an autopsy report, Chand said, adding that police on Monday took Kumari into custody and registered a case of murder against her.

Kumari told police that the baby had been suffering from fever, cough and weight loss and that her neighbors told her the infant could be infected with the AIDS virus. Kumari and her husband adopted the boy two weeks ago after having three daughters.

Police said the woman did not have any medical tests conducted on the baby, reports the AP.
