Armenia is the only one of the former Soviet republics whose energy system is completely isolated from other countries and UES of Russia intends to change this. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced yesterday by CEO of UES of Russia Anatoly Chubais, who is currently in Yerevan.
He said that entry into the energy system which UES of Russia is creating will make electricity in the Transcaucasus significantly more reliable. 'Armenia will be able to import and export electricity like never before,' Mr Chubais said. In his opinion, the isolation of the Armenian energy system is not caused by economics but by political forces, in particular the conflict in Nagorny-Karabakh.
Armenian Prime Minister Andranak Markarian said the country is willing to collaborate with Georgia and Azerbaijan in the energy sector. 'Mr Chubais is supporting us in this,' he said.
Mr Chubais added that UES of Russia has serious plans to enter the Turkish energy market and is even planning to participate in the privatisation of Turkey's network of energy distributors. In his opinion, Armenia could export electricity to Turkey if it is included in the company's energy system.
