In the event of escalation of the conflict in Karabakh, Pakistan will stand with Azerbaijan and provide necessary aid. As reported in the Baku newspaper Echo, the assertion was made at a meeting with journalists by Adm. Shahid Karimullah, commander of the Pakistan navy. He added: 'We state it publicly here that we stand ready to sell weapons to Azerbaijan.'
Karimullah said Pakistan desires widened military cooperation with Azerbaijan and intends to conduct negotiations leading toward a step-up in training Azerbaijani military personnel in Pakistan army and navy units. At a meeting with Azerbaijan Defense Minister Safar Abiyev, Karimullah again emphasized that 'official Islamabad has always supported and will continue to support official Baku on all questions.'
