Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Mamedov met, Thursday, with his Canadian counterpart Gaetan Lavertu. As the Novosti news agency knows from the Russian foreign ministry's information and press department, the ministers focused on a G-8 summit, due to take place in Genova in July. Apart from that, the two ministers deemed it necessary to step up their countries' cooperation in resolving international issues of current importance, such as strategic stability, particularly, disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as prevention of arms race in space, according to the Russian foreign ministry. Messrs. Mamedov and Lavertu praised the bilateral and multilateral consultations aimed at preserving and strengthening the international "architecture of disarmament" created in recent years. The ministers exchanged opinions on issues related to bilateral teamwork in the wake of the Russo-Canadian summit meeting of December, 2000.
