Fishing Trawler Mys Levashova Sinks In Bering Sea

Investigations into the causes of the fire that had led to the sinking of the fishing trawler Mys Levashova in the Bering Sea, began on Monday in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (the Far East). The incident happened in the evening of the previous day some 20 miles east of Cape Shipunsky. One man died from burns received during the fire and the remaining 52 members of the crew were rescued. A fire suddenly broke out on board the trawler which belongs to the fishing company Kamchatrybprom. To the signal of distress, the burning vessel was approached by three Russian crab-catching ships. The crews did all they could in the course of 3 hours to extinguish the fire, but in vain. After an explosion went off in the bow of the trawler, it began to submerge and sank to a depth of 1,000 metres The victim died of burns sustained during the fire.
