White House Announces The Beginning Of Consultations With Congress On Revocation Of Jackson-Vanik Amendment

The U.S. Administration has begun consultations with Congress and interested groups on the possibility of ending the application of the Jackson-Vanik amendment to Russia, the White House press service has reported. The report said the amendment, which linked foreign trade with the freedom of emigration, was adopted by Congress in 1974. Since 1994, Russia has invariably met the amendment's emigration requirements, the report went on and emphasised that revoking the amendment is a necessary condition for granting Russia permanent normal status in foreign trade with the United States. The report points out that the ending of the amendment's application requires Congress approval.
