Australia's Victoria State Struck by Worst Floods in Last 15 Years

Thunderstorms and heavy downpours have triggered massive flooding in Australia's Victoria State, threatening the safety of hundreds of homes.

The State Emergency Services say the army has been called in to help assess the damage inflicted by the floods.

This is while residents are working together to sandbag businesses and homes to protect them against rising floodwaters. Downpours have also triggered landslides in some parts of Victoria, according to Press TV.

Victoria is going through the worst floods that it has seen in the last 15 years. The two towns of Horsham and Shepparton are still at risk of more torrential rains.

The damage that has already been done by the floodwater has reach more than $10 million. This number is set to grow as people in Victoria continue to assess the damages. More than 500 farms and properties are thought to have been affected by the floods.

Residents and tourists have also been advised to buy bottled water. This is due to the fact that some fear that contamination could have taken place in local reservoirs.

Almost 40,000 people are still without electricity in Victoria. With more heavy rain on the way, the clean up operation could be hampered and prolonged even more, Overseas reports.
