The United States upset Cuba 25-13, 22-25, 27-25, 20-25, 15-10 to win the NORCECA Women's Continental Championship volleyball final on Sunday.
After Cuba won the fourth set to force a decider, the Americans jumped to another fast start, sealing the final on a finesse play by Tayyiba Haneef. With the win, the U.S. team qualified for the Grand Champions Cup event in Japan in November.
Danielle Scott led the Americans with 20 points, while Zoila Barros topped Cuba with 21. The U.S. team's left-handed wizard, Nancy Metcalf, was voted tournament MVP. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico 25-19, 25-19, 25-13 to take third place. Cindy Rondon Martinez led the Dominican Republic with 16 points, while Eva Cruz added 11 points for Puerto Rico, AP reports.
