Japanese Officials Want to Steal Away from Journalists

Japanese authorities invented a method how high-ranking officials can steal away from troublesome journalists after their conferences with the prime ministers.

It is reported in Tokyo that a special tunnel is being constructed under the building of the prime minister's new residence; governmental officials may use the tunnel to steal away from journalists. According to Kyodo news agency, the tunnel of about 200 meters in length will be a connection between the prime minister's office built near the Tokyo parliament in March 2002 with the secretariat and the house of the government. Construction of the tunnel is expected to be finished in 2004.

There are some apprehensions whether the new project will change the government's transparency or not. When the new construction is placed in operation journalists won't have a chance to see whom the prime minister receives for talks and when. But officials say that the tunnel is important for delivery of documents to the prime minister. Now officials have to go out of doors to take papers to the prime minister's office, but documents "may get wet in the rain." This is the reason why, officials say, a new tunnel is being built.
