Twice pregnant

An extremely rare case in medical practice has been registered in one of towns of northern Italy. A 20-year-old woman, who was expected to give birth to a girl in about 2 weeks’ time, has become pregnant again. In late-December, she is to give birth to triplets, 2 girls and 1 boy. According to the Coriere Adriatico newspaper, the case is closely followed by doctors in one of clinics in the Italian capital. At the relatives’ demand, the mother to be’s name is not disclosed. The “double pregnancy” phenomenon is an extremely rare occurrence with only 20 such cases being recorded in the world, physician Carlo Flamigni says. In the meantime, the woman, reacting to the doctors’ suspicions, categorically denies taking hormones before getting pregnant and reiterates that there have been frequent twins through her father’s line.
