Hundreds of female civil servants made a trouser protest recently, turning up to work defiantly in trousers, the use of which is banned by law in public buildings in the ultra-conservative Turkish society.
Public buildings are post offices, schools and government offices, such as tax offices and registry offices. A spokesperson for the union of state school teachers said that she hoped the protest would alert society about the sexual discrimination inherent in Turkish law.
Mujgan Arpat, from the Turkish Association of Human Rights, declared, “Women can decide very well for themselves what they wear to the workplace. This protest is an attempt to bring our society into the modern era”.
Turkish men beware! When women start to wear the trousers…
