The world handball championship in Portugal got off to a thrilling start yesterday with an exciting victory by Russia over Hungary.

The teams lined up as follows: Russia:Lavrov; Egorov, Gorpichine, Ivanov (5), Kokcharov (7), Krivoshlykov (2), Rastvortsev (9), Torgovanov (1), Toutchkin (4) and Moskalenko (3). Team coach: V. Maximov.

Hungary: Szathmari and Fazekas; Bendo (6), Buday (5), Lenday, Rosta (2), nagy (9), Pasztor, Ivancsik (1), Perez (7), Gal and Doros. Team coach: L. Skaliczki.

Russia led 15-14 at half time.
