Mikhail Yuzhny Wins First Round Australian Open Match

Russian Mikhail Yuzhny has started his Australian Open campaign with a victory. The hero of the Davis Cup final confidently dispatched 16-year-old French player Richard Gasquet.

The Russian did not brim with confidence in the first set, losing it 6:3. However, after his shaky start, Yuzhny gave his opponent no chance, taking the next two sets in only 48 minutes, 6:0, 6:1. The Russian went on to seal the match in style 6:3 in the fourth set. In just over two hours, Yuzhny won his first round Australian Open tie.

His next match will be against home favorite Joseph Sirianni, who is a wild card entry and was personally invited by the organizers and tournament sponsors. The Australian beat Belarussian player Maksim Mirny in the first round.
