Russia has 12,000 babies born through artificial insemination

12,000 babies have been born through artificial insemination in Russia, head obstetrician-gynaecologist of the Russian Health Ministry Vladimir Kulakov told journalists after a working trip to Cheboksary, the capital of Chuvashia (the Volga region).

According to Kulakov, 5-6 million Russian women and 4 million men are infertile.

Kulakov said that there are very few artificial insemination laboratories in the country that are based in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Cheboksary only. Meanwhile, it is necessary to create another 120-150 laboratories.

Kulakov added that abortion rates have shrunk over the last five years in Russia. The doctor expressed himself for banning abortions for women six and more months pregnant.
