Secretary of Russian Security Council still in Kamchatka hospital

Secretary of the Russian Security Council Vladimir Rushaylo and Kamchatkaregional governor Mikhail Mashkovtsev, who got in a car accident on theKamchatka Peninsula on September 9, 2002, are still in a regional hospital.Rushaylo is in intensive care with a cerebral concussion, bruises on theright side of his waist, left shoulder, left forearm and left hip as wellas a heart injury, etc. Mashkovtsev is in a neuro-surgical unit withnumerous injures as well. According to information of the regional StateDefense and Emergencies department, nine people suffered injures and six -died in the car accident. Among the victims are a Federal Security Serviceofficer, the Head of the Kamchatka regional department of the FederalSecurity Service and his driver and three citizens ofPetropavlovsk-Kamchatski. They all were driving in a Jeep car. According to information, the accident happened at about 8:50 a.m. Moscowtime near the 14th kilometer of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski - Yelizovohighway. The motorcade was bound for a nuclear submarine base station.Suddenly, a Toyota Surf car appeared in their way driving at 80km per hour.A driver in a Volga car, an official of the regional Federal SecurityService department, pulled out of formation with his car. Four securityservicemen were in the Volga. As a result of the crash, the Toyota truckflew over the Volga and fell on a van behind it that was carrying thehigh-ranking officials. A criminal case was filed by the Kamchatka regional prosecutor's office andan investigation procedure is in progress. The whole process is overseen byDeputy General Prosecutor of the Far East federal district KonstantinChayka. .
