Energie Baden- Wuerttemberg, the third largest of the German utility groups, is seeking further acquisitions and partnerships in the natural-gas market and is interested in Bayerngas GmbH, a Bavarian gas supplier.
“We see growth potential mainly in neighboring regions, for example with Bayerngas,” Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg board member Pierre Lederer said in a faxed statement.
Like bigger rivals E.ON and RWE, Energie Baden- Wuerttemberg wants a bigger share of Germany's twenty billion dollar natural gas market as demand for the fuel grows in the country. The company together with Italy's Eni last week bought a 62.2 stake in southern German gas supplier Gasversorgung Sueddeutschland.
Bayerngas is one of Germany's largest regional gas distributors. The company last year sold 60 billion kilowatt hours of gas and generated 2.5 billion euros ($2.46 billion) in sales, according to its Web site.
