Russian communist party chief Gennadi Zyuganov has commented on Ariel Sharon’s election victory in Israel calling it the “triumph of aggressive policy.” In Mr. Zyuganov’s view, a “force component” has won in Israel. To resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict, one has to “take a full account of the interests of the Palestinian people, that is, to observe the well-known UN resolution,” Mr. Zyuganov is quoted by RIA Novosi as saying. However, the Russian State Duma Chairman Gennadi Seleznyov, Mr. Zyuganov’s comrade-in-arms, was not so categorical in assessing the Israeli election results. According to Mr. Seleznyov, such results “should have been anticipated,” and he “does not know to what extent Mr. Sharon’s policy is going to be better that Mr. Barak’s.”
