A powerful earthquake rocked India and Pakistan on Friday, knocking over buildings and houses, and killing at least 140 people. The 6.9-magnitude quake killed 136 in Gujarat - the arid western Indian state where 100 buildings collapsed and most of the deaths are reported. 'Forty buildings are said to have collapsed in Ahmedabad, the state's main commercial centre. The U.S. Geological Survey reports on its Web site that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 and was felt from Pakistan to Nepal, and in India, from New Delhi to Bombay and Madras in the south. According to the Associated Press, there were also reports of mine cave-ins, train derailments, broken water pipes, downed power and phone lines.
