State Duma Depute: EU is more successful in peacemaking than USA

The European Union may easily substitute the United States as a major peacekeeper in the regions of tension, stated Georgy Maitakov, the deputy head of the Duma security committee. According to him, latest actions of Javier Solana, the EU's spokesman for foreign and security policy, to regulate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict prove the readiness of the EU for peacekeeping activities. The deputy stressed that the activities of the EU did not restrict to a simple stabilization of the situation, they were directed at the economic restoration of the region on the whole, RBC reports. He added that in contrast to the USA the EU did not pursue the goal of the economic and political expansion in the world's regions of tension.
