German Firm to Build Wind Farm in Kaliningrad Region

A wind farm with a capacity of 30 megawatts is to be built in the Kaliningrad Region. The regional administration signed a protocol of intentions concerning the construction of the wind farm with German company Repower Systems on Tuesday.

According to Fritz Vahrenholt, the chairman of the German company, the wind farm will be built on the Baltic coast and consist of 20 wind turbines. The project will require around EUR 30 million in investment, part of which will be spent on setting up production of wind turbines, which will then be exported. The wind farm should be brought into use by the end of this year.

Kaliningrad Governor Vladimir Yegorov said that the regional administration is interested in creating alternative sources of electricity and will therefore give its full support to the project, including running a suitable tariff policy and protecting investors' legal interests. The governor also stressed that the region will not invest any money from its budget into the construction project nor provide budget guarantees for investments into the region's economy.

Yegorov also said that the region already has a wind farm with a capacity of 5.1 megawatts near the village of Kulikovo, which was a gift from Denmark. The new wind farm will be the most powerful in Russia and will meet 5% of the region's electricity needs.

Repower Systems is Germany's leading electricity company and the 8th largest in the world. It has wind farms in Australia, Canada, China, Great Britain, Japan and other countries. The company expects to have a turnover of EUR 330 million in the current year.
