Vicente Maubucy Ximenes' comments will add to pressure on Alkatiri, whom many blame for weeks of unrest in the capital, according to the AP.

"We asked the president to suspend him as prime minister and form a government of transition while waiting for next year's election," Ximenes told reporters, claiming to speak for a majority of the Fretilin party.
