JFK briefly evacuated after man slips into plane without boarding pass

New York's JFK airport was evacuated after a man passed by security officer and went straight to his flight without a boarding pass after going out for a smoke.

William Contreras Ramos, 20, of Puerto Rico, was being held in upstate New York on Wednesday awaiting questioning by federal officials. according to Albany County Sheriff James Campbell .

Ramos said that after going for a smoke outside John F. Kennedy International Airport Tuesday afternoon, he noticed he was running late for his flight to Albany and did not have his boarding pass, Campbell said.

Instead of going through the security checkpoint, he went in through an exit lane, walking past a private security officer who works at the airport and on to his flight, the federal Transportation Security Administration said.

The guard was unable to locate Ramos and notified the TSA, sparking a massive search, the evacuation of the terminals and the re-screening of the passengers. Meanwhile, authorities in Albany were notified the man was on board the flight.

He was detained upon arrival.

Ramos had no weapons on him, but a straight razor was found in his carry-on luggage, said Campbell.

The TSA said in a statement on its Web site that "there is no known nexus to terrorism at this time."
