Presidential election can go ahead, Pakistan's Supreme Court says

Pakistan's Supreme Court ruled Friday that an election expected to extend President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's eight-year rule can proceed.

However, the court said the results should not be announced until it rules on a legal challenge to Musharraf's eligibility.

Presiding Justice Javed Iqbal rejected an appeal from Musharraf's opponents for a delay, saying that "the election process should continue as per schedule."

Hearings on petitions filed by Musharraf's opponents will resume on Oct. 17, Iqbal said.
