Car hit a water buffalo named William Shakespeare in northwest England, injuring three people, police said Tuesday.

The animal, which was killed, had escaped from a field in Cumbria, a county better known for its herds of cattle and rugged hill-dwelling sheep.

Rescue workers cut a 19-year-old man from the wreckage of his car after he struck the animal Monday night near the town of Dalton-in-Furness. He was treated in a local hospital for minor injuries.

Two other cars collided as they swerved to avoid the animal. The driver of one car and her passenger both suffered whiplash, police said.

Cumbria Police said the buffalo had been privately owned by a local man.
