Rains flood homes, disrupt transport in northern Greece

Heavy rains Monday flooded dozens of homes and disrupted road and rail transport in northern Greece, officials said.

Around 100 basements and ground-floor buildings were flooded in the villages of Makri and Dikella near the northeastern city of Alexandroupoli, some 350 kilometers (220 miles) east of Thessaloniki.

Landslides caused by heavy rainfall forced the closure of a railway line between Alexandroupoli and the town of Komotini, officials said. Floodwaters also destroyed two bridges on country roads in the area and damaged the local road network.

Storm warnings on Sunday prompted officials to briefly evacuate a camp for handicapped children at Leptokarya, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Thessaloniki, as a precaution. The camp was functioning normally Monday.

Also Sunday, heavy fog disrupted flights at Thessaloniki's airport.
