Alvin, the first tropical storm of the 2007 season in the eastern Pacific, formed far off Mexico's western coast on Monday, but was expected to head out to sea.

Alvin's winds reached minimum tropical storm speeds of 39 miles per hour (62.5 kph), but the storm was expected to head west, away from land, over the next week, the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida reported.

The storm did not appear very well organized or likely to strengthen significantly, the center said.
