Man shot and wounded near premier's residence in India

A man, driving past the prime minister’s residence, was shot and injured Thursday, police said. But there was no threat to India’s leader because he was not at home at the time.

"This has nothing whatsoever to do with the prime minister, it was just on the road outside his house, near the Jaipur Polo Ground," said police spokesman Rajan Bhagat.

Within an hour of the 2:30 p.m. (1000GMT) shooting, traffic was flowing freely past Singh's residence and there was only a light police presence.

The CNN-IBN news channel reported that Singh was away at the time.

Details of the shooting were scant, but police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said the victim pulled over after being shot. He approached police officers guarding the road, who took him to a hospital.

Bhagat also said a pistol and cash had been found in a car parked on the road opposite the residence, but that investigators "do not yet know if this was the vehicle of the victim or the assailant," who has not been apprehended.
