Snow fell in the Nepalese capital for the first time in 62 years on Wednesday, as bitter winter rains and fog disrupted domestic flights in the Himalayan nation, weather officials said.

Meteorologist Krishna Manandhar said it snowed for about 45 minutes in Katmandu, but it did not accumulate on the ground because the temperature was not below freezing.

Manandhar said the snow was due to continuous winter rains, which started Tuesday.

Although Nepal is home to some of the highest mountains in the world, temperatures don't usually dip below freezing in most parts of this tiny South Asian nation, the AP reports.

Poor visibility due to the rains and fog also forced most domestic flights to be canceled or delayed, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.
