Super typhoon set to skirt Japan's eastern coast

A super typhoon packing winds of almost 200 kilometers (122 miles) an hour surged toward Japan's eastern coast on Friday, prompting authorities to issue high sea warnings for outlying islands in the storm's path.

Super Typhoon Yagi was about 1,280 kilometers (777 miles) south of Tokyo and 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of the outlying islands of Chichijima at 2:00 p.m. (0500 GMT).

It was expected to travel toward Japan's eastern coast at about 35 kilometers (22 miles) an hour before swerving northwards, skirting Japan's main island of Honshu and bringing gusty winds and showers, reports AP.

Japan's Meteorological Agency issued high sea warnings for the Chichijima Islands and the Izu island chain stretching south of Tokyo.

Typhoon Yagi is named after the Japanese word for Capricorn, or "yagiza."
