Britain: government relaxes restrictions at airports

The British Airports Authority, which operates Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports serving London, implemented the government's revised rules which permit passengers to take a single, briefcase-sized bag aboard.

The government announced Monday it was lowering the country's threat level from critical to severe.

Passengers are allowed to carry on board flights one item of hand luggage about the size of a computer laptop bag. Mobile phones, laptops and electric key fobs are permitted, but cosmetics, gels, toothpaste, liquids and sharp objects were still forbidden inside airplane cabins, the AP reports.

British Airways canceled 20 percent of its flights from London on Tuesday, the same as Monday. BA cut four U.S.-bound flights, 21 short-haul flights and 16 domestic services from Heathrow, and 11 domestic departures from Gatwick.

British Defense Secretary Des Browne said work was under way on new security requirements for airports.
