Tariceanu said he had spoken to British authorities about Romania's withdrawing its troops after Italy announced earlier this month a decision to pull its troops out of Iraq.

No timetable was given for the withdrawal. Atanasiu will formally make a request to the country's top defense body, which will then approve the withdrawal, the AP reports.

Last week a Romanian soldier was killed in Afghanistan, the fourth Romanian soldier to die since 2003. Romania has about 700 peacekeeping troops in Afghanistan, and 890 in Iraq. One Romanian soldier has died in Iraq.

There was no word on the future of the Afghanistan mission.
