Bangladesh: storms kill 3, injure 35

Storms have killed at least three villagers and injured 35 others in northern Bangladesh, a news report said Thursday.

The storms lashed more than a dozen villages late Wednesday in Sirajganj district, 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of the capital, Dhaka, the United News of Bangladesh agency reported.

A 12-year-old boy was killed instantly when a tree fell on him in the district's Belkuchi area, and two elderly villagers died nearby after the walls of their mud-and-staw hut collapsed on them, the report said.

Strong winds and rain also knocked down dozens of huts in the impoverished region, injuring about 35 villagers, the agency said.

The storms also damaged crops in the area, the agency said, citing unidentified officials.

Officials could not be reached immediately for comment on the report, reports the AP.
