Gunmen attacked a police post in a remote northwestern tribal region near the Afghan border, killing three policemen before fleeing, an official said Thursday.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack late Wednesday at Koikai in the Bajur tribal region, about five kilometers (three miles) inside Pakistan, said Abdul Qayyum, a deputy administrator.

He said authorities were still investigating.

Mohammed Silahuddin, an area police official, said the bodies of slain officers had been handed over to their families for burial.

Pro-Taliban and al-Qaida-linked militants are active along Pakistan's northwestern border with Afghanistan, reports the AP.
