Bridge collapses on Danish highway: 1 killed, 5 wounded

A bridge undergoing repair work collapsed onto a highway in northwestern Denmark on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring at least five others, including one seriously, police said.

Television footage showed debris from the collapsed road bridge scattered across the E45 highway near Aalborg, 230 kilometers (140 miles) northwest of Copenhagen, police said.

Police said several cars had been trapped when the bridge came crashing down shortly after 0800GMT.

One of the injured was reported in a serious condition while the other four, all construction workers, had minor injuries.

The bridge was being repaired when it collapsed onto the highway, which leads to a tunnel under the Limfjord waterway that runs through Aalborg, police said. The highway and the tunnel were immediately closed to traffic, reports the AP.
